What is the difference between Scotch & Single Malt Whisky?

Updated: Aug 4, 2022

Do you ever get confused when people talk about whisky? Is it whiskey or whisky? Why is whisky called scotch? Single malt vs Blended Scotch whisky?

Whisky or whiskey?

The spelling of “whisky” depends on where it is made. We spell “whiskey” when it is made in the US or Ireland; “whisky” when it is made in Scotland, Canada or Japan. The spelling “whisky” is more common as Scotland is the biggest producer of whisky.

Single malt whisky or Blended Scotch whisky

Single malt whisky is made from water and malted barley, whilst Blended Scotch whisky is made by mixing both malt whiskies and grain whiskies. Single malt whisky must also be distilled in a single distillery, while blended scotch could have combinations of whisky from over 40 to 50 distilleries.

Is it Scotch?

Whisky can only be called Scotch if the entire process of production and bottling occurs in Scotland.
